Studio 51 was Ken Colyer’s club close to Leicester Square and Covent Garden. I think this was one of its all-night sessions. Dupree, of course, was the (then not very well-known) blues/barrelhouse pianist/singer from New Orleans. I had not heard of him. If the year was indeed 1959, then the Deep Bayou personnel may have changed considerably since the previous time I saw them and may have looked like Terry Treagus or Ivan Wells trumpet, Charlie Webster trombone, Mick Betts or Johnny King clarinet, Frank Webster banjo, Humphrey Mayes double bass and Bill Cowley drums. Champion Jack sang some numbers with the band and, apparently, Ken Sims from Acker Bilk’s band also stood in, on trumpet.
