Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the great qawwali singer from Pakistan, gave a mesmerising performance of this music from the Sufi tradition, accompanied by harmoniums, tablas and singers. Both a great collective performance and an outstanding individual one, unparalleled in my experience. They were preceded by Farafina, a Burkina Faso group, with instruments like balafon and kora, percussion, keyboards too. Reviewed by Tony Herrington in Wire 55, September 1988.
