Mahlathini & The Mahotella Queens, Ronnie Scott's, London (GB) - 12 juin 1988

Mbaqanga music from South Africa, township jive, wonderfully melodic and danceable. Mahlathini (Simon Nkabinde) was the prime singer, with his throaty groan of a voice, but The Mahotella Queens (Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu, Mildred Mangxota) were major performers in their own right, harmony singing and dancing with great energy. The Makgona Tsohle Band which accompanied them should have been given equal billing they were so good. They probably were West Nkosi alto sax, Marks Mankwane lead guitar, Vivian Ngubane guitar, Joseph Makwela bs guitar, Lucky Monama drums. Great evening.
