First large jazz orchestra experience and very fitting that it was the best band. Likely personnel: Cat Anderson, Roy Burrowes, Willie Cook, Cootie Williams, trumpets, Ray Nance trumpet/violin, Lawrence Brown, Booty Wood, Buster Cooper, Juan Tizol trombones, Johnny Hodges alto/soprano sax, Russell Procope alto sax/clarinet, Paul Gonsalves tenor sax, Jimmy Hamilton tenor sax/clarinet, Harry Carney baritone sax, Duke Ellington piano, Ernie Shepard double bass, Sam Woodyard drums. It is just possible Clark Terry, trumpet, was present; I recall seeing him but I’m not sure when and his tenure with Ellington apparently was 1951-59. Terrific experience.
