With a lineage of Nocturnal Projections, This Kind of Punishment, Children's Hour, Headless Chickens and Peter Jefferies solo, this trio of Peter (Keyboard/vocals), Chris Mathews (Guitar/vocals), and Heath Te Au (drums) promised a darker trip into NZ music month nostalgia. Peter was first up with a few solo songs rhythmically pounding out the keys for On an Unknown Beach and Guided Tour of a Well Known Street as well as the unexpected audience interactive hand clap back beat to one song. Chris and Heath took over for a quick set of NZ indie gems, Toy Love and Tall Dwarfs getting the guitar and drum run through. Then with Peter back and a three piece power trio made way for This Kind of Punishment (Immigration Song loud and heavy), Children;s Hour (Caroline's Dream - second time I heard it live, last was circa 1984, a haunting NZ dark classic), Headless Chickens(Mr Moon stripped down to its haunting lyrics) . Finally something I thought was a long gone missed train, a few Nocturnal songs, pretty apt with a long over due vinyl release coming out.
