Rock Against Racism : Tom Robinson Band/Steel Pulse, Victoria Park, London (GB) - Apr 30, 1978

This was the famous outdoor concert in which bands showed solidarity with those campaigning against right-wing and racist movements, in particular the National Front. It was organised by Rock Against Racism and the Anti-Nazi League and followed a march from Trafalgar Square by tens of thousands of people. The Tom Robinson Band were Danny Kustow guitar, Nick Plytas keyboards, Tom Robinson vocal/bass guitar, Dolphin Taylor drums. They played their well-known number (Sing if You’re) Glad to be Gay. The probable make-up of Steel Pulse was: David Hinds lead vocal/guitar, Basil Gabbidon lead guitar/vocal, Selwyn Brown keyboards/vocal, Ronald McQueen bass guitar, Steve Nisbett drums/percussion, Alphonso Martin percussion/vocal, Mykaell Riley percussion/vocal. They are a roots reggae band, Rastafarian, politically and socially committed, Africanist. This event was memorable because of the music and the context. Unfortunately I missed The Clash and X-Ray Spex who also were there.
